Advising Services for Internationally Trained Immigrants (ITIs)

Advising services for ITIs addresses the issue that too many ITIs waste time, money and motivation in order to obtain information, advice and support to reach their employment goals.  ITI advising services are critical to raising awareness of, and access to, the information that will enable ITIs to gain meaningful employment.  ITI advisors are the first point of contact for ITIs who proceed to benefit from other CIITE activities such as credential recognition. ITI Advisors also provide appropriate information regarding education and employment options as well as referrals to settlement agencies.

  • In Phase 3.1, ITI advising was provided by 20 full-time equivalent  advisors at 15 colleges. As of March 13, 2009, these advisors served more than 4,096 ITIs.

  • The service is being well received as demonstrated by the results of the ITI Satisfaction Survey conducted in early January 2009. Of the 321 ITIs across all 15 colleges who completed the survey, 86.6% of the ITI respondents rated advisor services as “good” (45.3%) or “excellent” (41.3%).

Although CIITE funded 20 positions, many colleges are responding to the high ITI demand on their campuses by identifying additional supports and funding for supplementary advising capacity. It is expected that ITI demand will continue to increase and additional advisors will be required in the future.  The CIITE Phase 3.1 ITI Advising activity has positively impacted and affected ITIs ability to access services and training that will lead to meaningful employment.  ITI Advisors have become essential members of college client service teams and with the anticipated increasing numbers of immigrants moving to Ontario, the need for this service will continue.
