Competency Assessment

Competency Assessments is a process in which the skills and knowledge of internationally trained immigrants are assessed against program learning outcomes or job competencies in order to provide a quicker path to employment that avoids duplication of learning. Working with 12 Ontario colleges, CIITE built upon the generic Competency Assessment model developed in Phase 2 and developed career specific processes, competencies and assessment tools.  This was undertaken for an unregulated profession, Mechanical Engineering Technology (design) and for a regulated profession, Respiratory Therapy.

For Mechanical Engineering Technology (Design) eight colleges participated in the development of 13 competencies. A process and assessment tools were developed to assess the skills and knowledge of ITIs against these competencies.  The Respiratory Therapy team represented three colleges and developed a three stage assessment process and assessment tools.

For details on the outcomes of the Competency Assessment pilots please see the Phase 3.1 Final Report.
